The natural gas used today was created from organic substances. It was formed when petroleum or coal deposits were formed. The starting material was the dead remnants of plankton and algae from shallow prehistoric seas, which sank to the bottom of the sea and – decomposed by bacteria – fermented as digested sludge. Deposits of fine-grain mainland debris (clay, sand, lime) became petroleum bedrock. The organic material it contained was converted into a solid, petroleum-like substance, bitumen. As the seabed continued to sink and the bedrock was increasingly covered by younger sediments, liquid and gaseous hydrocarbons were formed from the bitumen under increasing pressure and temperature. It was difficult then light oil and finally – at correspondingly high pressures and temperatures – natural gas. Such natural gas is widespread in basins that are expected to be rich in hydrocarbons.
